Kathakali (pronounced “Ka-tuh-Kah-lee”) is a traditional South Indian dance form that originated in the southern state of Kerala. The word Kathakali means “story-play.” Kathakali is known for its ornate costumes, vibrant makeup, and complex facial expressions. Kathakali dancers often tell stories from Hindu mythology through their movements, and the dance is accompanied by music from traditional South Indian instruments. The dance is performed in Hindu religious texts or stories and often tells the story of the Hindu god Krishna.

Kathakali dancers must undergo years of training to perfect the dance form’s complex movements and expressions. Today, Kathakali is performed all over India and has even gained a global following. If you ever have the chance to see a Kathakali performance, you will surely be amazed by its beauty and grace.
