Considering the digital age we are living in, it is difficult to separate the kids from gadgets like phones and tablets. Also, young kids are beginning to show signs of phone addiction. As a parent, do you realize that you could be the reason for your kid’s phone addiction? Parents often hand over their phones to young children to make their lives easier and to entertain the child. For example, when they are travelling or when they are at a restaurant or shopping at a mall, they play their kid’s favourite cartoon or rhymes on the phone, hand over the phone to kids to make them settle down while they are busy. Studies show that dopamine levels increase in kids’ bodies when they spend time on phones. Dopamine is a chemical released in the brain that controls the pleasure centres in our brain. When this chemical is released in the body, we feel good and we want more of whatever is boosting our dopamine levels. The more time our kids spend on phones, the more dopamine is released in their brains. This spike in dopamine has the same effect as addictive drugs, and the brain becomes dependent on it. Eventually, kids get so engrossed in their phones and may not know what to do without them.
